In the early 1980's,
Doug joined up with the Detroit chapter of the Michigan Salmon and
Steelhead Fisherman's Association; the Detroit Steelheaders (The Detroit Area Steelheaders, Inc. became
an independent club in the late 1980's). Soon, Doug
was active on the club's Board of Directors and remained so for many years.
Doug is still active as a past President and until recently was the long time head of the
clubs River, Surf and Pier Tournament Committee. Here, as well as with
the Michigan Fly Fishing Club and other such clubs and organizations
that Doug belongs to, Doug freely gives of his time and most
importantly his knowledge to help teach the public on how to make the
sport of fishing most enjoyable.
Today, Doug has put
his years of fishing the Great Lakes, Rivers and Streams to work for
his clients as a licensed Charter Captain. Captain Doug Karakas
can accommodate clients for personal trips of one or two people on his
drift boat or in the Starcraft Islander the 'Capt-N-Hook II', or
he can accommodate larger groups when fishing Lake Michigan from Ludington on his 28' Cherokee Sport.
